Black Tejas Gravel – Small
Small Tejas black gravel, the 3/8-inch grade, for beds and borders. Compare it with the large size before you order.
Tejas black gravel on this page is the small grade. The photo is the 3/8-inch Black Tejas. It is a dark, rounded-to-tumbled look used in beds, borders, and other places you want a consistent black surface rather than a mixed creek stone.
The bigger grade is a different product: Black Tejas large. Do not assume the two sizes look the same once they are down. Small reads as a texture. Large reads as individual stones.

Where the small grade works
- Garden beds where you want a dark, even cover over fabric
- Borders along a walk or a planting edge
- Decorative ground around pots, where a mixed river rock would look busy
It is a surface stone. It is not a driveway base, and it is not the washed angular rock a French drain spec usually names. If the job is drainage structure, use the gravel guide and the size your contractor wrote down. The longer Black Tejas notes are in the Black Tejas article.
What to look at in the yard
Black stone shows dust. Rinse a handful. The dry pile looks gray; the wet pile is the color you will see after rain. Compare this small grade next to the large pile before you choose, especially if the bed is something you see from the door.
Depth is the same idea as other bed rock: enough to cover fabric, not so much that you bury plants. Finish from one pile. A second lot of “black” can be a different black.
How much, and how it leaves the yard
Measure the bed in feet, multiply length by width by depth, and divide by 27 for cubic yards. Add a little for edges. A pickup is fine for a small border if the truck can carry the weight. A full bed is a dump. Tell us about the gate and the dump spot so the load does not land in the grass.
Other dark or fine gravels, including Silvermist, are in the gravel category if this black is too strong for the house. See them wet, next to a brick or a photo of the wall.
Pair the black with a hard edge. A steel or stone border keeps the small grade from walking into the lawn, which is the usual complaint a month later. If the bed is only a ribbon along a walk, measure that ribbon. A 40-foot border that is 18 inches wide at 2 inches deep is a small order. Guessing “a few buckets” is how the last ten feet end up a different black.
The main Dallas yard is Bickham Rd. Hours for every yard are on the locations page. Call (469) 972-6781 or ask for a quote if the crew needs this size confirmed before they roll.
Questions people ask
Is small Black Tejas the same as the large?
Same name, different size. This page is the small, 3/8-inch grade. Use the large product when you want stones you can see one by one.
Will it stay put on a slope?
Small dark gravel moves more easily than a large crushed stone. Edge the bed. On a steep slope, ask whether a larger or more angular stone is the better fit.
Do you install it?
No. We sell the gravel. Bring the square footage and how the bed will be edged.
